“Even the grapes burned”. The story of Vasyl’s family from Makariv

Picture: Vasyl Fedorenko

Vasyl Fedorenko, his wife, a fifteen-year-old son, and a nine-year-old daughter lived in their house in Makariv. They were among the last ones who managed to evacuate on the 11th of March. At the end of March, a shell hit their house and it burned to ashes.

Neighbors said that Vasyl’s house was burning for three days, so hard that it was visible from far away. Vasyl often comes to the destroyed house, rakes the rubble, and looks for things that aren’t fully destroyed. He said that it was nice to find some charred thing that used to catch his eye every day.

The man had a favorite collection of badges and Ukrainian coins, but it wasn’t preserved.

Now Vasyl’s relatives want to return from abroad, but they have nowhere to go.

Our goal was to raise $20 000 for an installation of a new modular house for this family. Ukrainian IT company Zoolatech joined our initiative and donated $35,000, part of which was used to install a new modular house for Vasyl’s family.
